  • Webinar on May 31: Easy Meadows – Useless Lawns into Meadows

Webinar on May 31: Easy Meadows – Useless Lawns into Meadows

Friends of the Earth Helsinki and Dodo organize a webinar on fostering biodiversity in courtyards and gardens. The Easy Meadow is a very simple concept: just leave a patch of lawn unmowed until late summer, and watch the previously suppressed flowering plants blossom! This will provide food and shelter for pollinators (among others), bring a pleasant new perspective to your everyday surroundings and decrease maintenance costs. And while there’s been plenty of advice for people who own their gardens, our focus is on how tenants can do this in their courtyards, which is often overlooked in the garden meadow discussion.

After an introduction to the Easy Meadows project we will hear a presentation by Beñat Olascoaga, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki who’s specialized in the ecology of lawns and meadows. Beñat will tell us about what science has to say about turning lawns into meadows – whether Easy Meadows or conventional ones.

The webinar will be in English (asking questions in Finnish is OK!) and take place on Friday the 31st of May at 5 P.M. on Jitsi. In case you want to join the event in person, you’re welcome to Ulrika, too (see directions below). To get the Jitsi link, please sign up by e-mail before the event begins: helsinki [at] maanystavat.fi

// Introduction to degrowth in our study circle May 8th

    (In English below)

Tällä kertaa luemme johdantoluvun artikkelikokoelmasta Degrowth: A Vocabulary for a New Era (2015), jonka ovat toimittaneen Giacomo D’Alisa, Federico Demaria ja Giorgios Kallis. Teksti löytyy kirjan nettisivuilta: https://vocabulary.degrowth.org/ Paikalle tai linjoille saa tulla keskustelemaan myös vaikkei olisi lukenut tekstiä.

Ajatuksena on tällä kertaa kokonaisen kirjan kahlaamisen sijaan valita kullekin tapaamiskerralle pienempiä kokonaisuuksia joihin perehtyä, eikä lukupiiriin tarvitse sitoutua sen kummemmin.

Tapaamme torstaina 8.5. klo 18 Ulrikassa (ks. ohjeet alla) ja etänä Jitsissä. Jos haluat etälinkin, ilmoittaudu etukäteen sähköpostitse: helsinki [at] maanystavat.fi

The study circle of Friends of the Earth Helsinki Region & University continues, and it’s a great time to join! This time we’ll be reading the introductory chapter of the book Degrowth: A Vocabulary for a New Era (2015), edited by Giacomo D’Alisa, Federico Demaria and Giorgios Kallis. The text is freely available on the book’s website: https://vocabulary.degrowth.org/ You can show up or join online for the discussion even if you haven’t read the text.

The idea this time is that instead of going through an entire book we choose smaller things for each time we meet, and there’s no need to commit to the study circle in any way.

We’ll meet on Thursday the 8th of May at 6 P.M. in Ulrika (see below for directions) and online in Jitsi. If you want the remote link, please sign up beforehand by e-mail: helsinki [at] maanystavat.fi
