4. The problems - Suffering in villages and forests

The serious problems linked with APRIL and UPM's jointly owned pulp and paper plant RAPP (Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper) reach from the way its raw material is procured over to land disputes and the disappearing of indigenous cultures in the area (chapters 4.1-4.4.).

APRIL's prior activities in North Sumatra give a pre-taste of what the development could be like in Riau (section 4.5). Due to this multitude of problems, NGOs from Indonesia, Finland and other countries have appealed to UPM-Kymmene to refrain from its planned co-operation projects in Indonesia (FoE Finland Dec. 18, 98).
